The digital euro is central bank digital money that would be issued and regulated by the European Central Bank. The thesis describes the process of introduction of the digital euro and its advantages and disadvantages. Furthermore, the concept of central bank digital money is defined in relation to virtual currencies as well as their differences. In addition, research was conducted on data subjects’ views on the use of the euro as a currency, digital currencies in general along with the introduction of the digital euro. The results of the research indicate that data subjects possess minimal awareness about digital currencies of central banks as well as digital currencies in general. Their attitudes towards the introduction of the digital euro are mostly neutral, however, a significant number of subjects is willing to accept the digital euro as a means of payment.
