This paper presents the concept of a hybrid winch drive intended for offshore application. The aim of this work was to develop an efficient winch drive. As most energy efficient, hydraulic and electric drive was selected. It was concluded that the hybrid winch drive concept was justified in terms economic viability and that there is great potential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions It has been shown why the hybrid concept approach has certain advantages when it comes to more energy efficient winch solutions. This approach allows part of the energy to be accumulated, and by doing so, reduce energy consumption, and finally greenhouse gas emissions. Rough economic savings were presented ant he amount of CO2 for which the reduction is expected is calculated. Emphasis is that these values are for one winch. The hybrid drive concept can be applied to several different branches of industry where it is necessary to achieve better working conditions For a specific winch, of selected amplitudes and periods, the transmission was dimensioned and certain hydraulic components were selected.
