Parental leave is used by employed and self-employed users with a duration specified by law. In addition to biological parents, the right to parental leave is exercised by other persons such as adoptive parents, foster parents, guardians and other natural persons entrusted with the care of the child. The basic rights of employed and self-employed parents are maternity, parental and paternity leave. Maternity leave begins 28, and at the earliest, 45 days before the mother gives birth and lasts until the child is six months old. 100% of the salary base is paid with the mandatory condition of insurance experience. Parental leave lasts 8 months for the first and second child, or 30 months for twins and each subsequent child. Parental leave can be used by both parents and can be combined with the non-transferable 2 months of leave that each parent must use individually. Compensation is paid in the amount with a limit of a maximum of 225% of the budget base. Parents of children with severe developmental disabilities receive leave or the right to work half the working time, and one half is financed by the Croatian Institute for Health Insurance. In addition to employed and self-employed beneficiaries, beneficiaries who earn other income, farmers outside the corporate income tax system and unemployed beneficiaries are also entitled to maternity and parental benefits.With the aim of developing demography, the Central State Office for Demography and Youth adopts an Implementation Program to combat demographic challenges by empowering parenting and families.
