In order to comprehend how a certan company runs business it is of higest importance to do financial analysis or so called analysis of financial reports. This analysis is conducted on grounds of financial report by horizontal or vertical analysis or means of financial demonstratives. Which method is best likely to be used deends on various internal and external groups attached to the company/society. The credentials and creditor institutions are specially interested in indebtedness analysis because it instructs them in ability of a company to fulfill her obligations. Indicators of indebtedness, which show the structure of capital and the ways in which an entity finances its assets, are most commonly used to estimate the level of iii indebtedness. They represent a degree of risk of investing in an enterprise, that is, they determine the degree of use of borrowed funds. In this project, a comparative analysis of the indebtedness of the five largest Croatian retail chains according to the criterium of sales revenue for a period of five years is made by using mentioned indicators. Each of the indicators is explained and interpreted in detail for every company. On the basis of all of the above, the conclusion is that high sales revenues do not necessarily lead to a high self-financing capacity and a quality financial management policy.
